Yes, Our Knickknacks is now on twitter at http://twitter.com/OurKnickknacks. But what IS Twitter and Why do YOU use it? I am sure that there are many people asking “HOW do I use this Twitter thing?”

Well, simply put Twitter is, what I like to call, a Micro-Blog where you only get 140 characters to say what’s either on your mind, what you are doing or, all too often, trying to get someone to buy what you have to sell. I have often thought that they should change that question to “What interesting topic would you like to Share?”, because sharing is what Twitter is, or should be, all about.

I have to admit that when we started using Twitter, we really didn’t know what it had to offer and we certainly didn’t know ALL of the people who started to follow us. We returned the Follows anyway because we wanted to be “Networking” in this new Social Media and get Our Knickknacks name “branded” and out there. Not so much trying to get people to buy what we had to sell, but to get people to come to our site and see what we had to offer, which, in retrospect, is probably the same thing. What we found was that everybody else had the same idea.

And then came the Kutcher vs. CNN race to 1 million followers. This begged the question “How does anyone keep up with THAT many followers?” After the dust settled and we found out that most celebrities really don’t care WHO follows them, only that they HAD that many followers, we began to realize that it is not the Quantity of followers that you have but the Quality of Followers. By Quality we don’t mean who is going to buy what you have to sell but rather who will converse, or tweet, with you in pleasant and sometimes informative 140 character sentences.

So, we changed our method of using Twitter to try and speak, in our 140 character message, in a similar manner as when we talk to our customers or anyone on the phone. We just did it in shorter sentences. On Twitter you can ask a question, provide an answer and/or offer a link that will provide more information.
